How do you help a young child understand a cancer diagnosis for a beloved family member?
The story of a breast cancer diagnosis, written by Ashley Dedmon, MPH, CHES®, serves as an educational tool to assist families and children in navigating through their cancer journey. Although the treatment process is introduced, it is left open, so families can navigate through their options and make informed decisions.
With a foreword written by Sandra Templeton, M.D., F.A.C.S., Breast Surgical Oncologist, this resource aims to help facilitate one of the most difficult conversations a mother could have with her children to help them understand the importance of early detection, testing, and the diagnosis of breast cancer. Inspiring real-life cancer survivor stories are featured, as well as a glossary with open-ended questions to help prompt dialogue and check for understanding.
So how exactly do you tell your child? Simply put, in your own way. Every child is unique, and the discussion should be done at their pace and comfort level. Our children come on the journey with us, so it’s essential to also focus on their emotional, mental, social and physical health. Stay strong, keep the faith and finish your race!
About Ashley Dedmon, MPH, CHES®
Breast cancer impacted three generations of women in her family. In 2003, when Ashley was 18 years old, her mother was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic breast cancer and, unfortunately, lost her four-year battle at the young age of 52. Shortly after her mother’s battle, her father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and is now a cancer survivor.
Ashley is now a proud BRCA2 previvor and the founder of Pink Legacy 50/50, a platform that educates, equips, and empowers individuals who are impacted by breast and ovarian cancer and high-risk for cancer. She is a wife, mother, former school teacher and a cancer advocate. She has a passion to help those affected by cancer, including fighters, survivors, previvors, caregivers and children.
