My name is Gabby I am 10 years old, I am the creator and inspiration of BRCAStrong. At the age of 6 years old my mom had a full hysterectomy and 6 months later she had a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy.
In the car one day we were talking about having her mastectomy and the recovery. She did not prep me for what was coming, and she was just going in for a procedure. She was home for 3 days and realized she had no more breast. I asked what happened. Mommy explained it to me as best as she could, and I looked at her and said you are like a butterfly because a butterfly goes through different stages. From there we developed a logo for BRCAStrong.
My favorite day was when mommy went to do laundry and said kids please start the wash. My brother and I got into the washing machine and proceeded to put the wet clothes into the dryer. Laundry was completed and fun for them.
Helping mommy heal was very complicated due to some problems she stumbled across. But I stuck by her side and made sure she never gave up. I missed her on the softball fields coaching and throwing the balls to me.
Fast forward to 2019 when mommy had to go back in for surgery. When I first found out I was sad and disappointed but always remember what she tells me “Never Give UP.” I hope that any child can express to their mom or dad their feelings behind surgery.
My advice to any kids that has gone through what I have is to keep your head up and never look down. Help in every aspect possible to make the healing process easier. One book that has HELPED me tremendously is Proactive Genes by Shannon Pulaski.
