Hello, I am Kate a Previvor, diagnosed at the age of 43 years old. My nana had breast cancer and pancreatic cancer, mom had breast cancer and chose to have a lumpectomy which lead her to genetic testing. My mom tested positive for BRCA1 hence why I got genetic testing came back BRCA1 positive, we are also Ashkenazi Jewish Decent.
When I found out I was BRCA positive I did not understand and was extremely overwhelmed. My gynecologist did my genetic testing and then referred me to gynecological oncologist, breast surgeon and plastic surgeon. I was told I had an 85% chance of breast cancer and a 20% for ovarian cancer. I decided to be proactive and have my ovaries and tubes removed.
In 2019 I was ready to take the next step and remove my breasts, this was not easy. My Stress and anxiety was high due to the fact I only wanted 1 surgery, which was direct to implant. One week after surgery an infection started which let me to the hospital for 10 days and 20 hypobaric treatments.
Although this process has not been easy, I am grateful, inspired and empowered to educate other women on the BRCA gene. During my journey searching on Facebook and Instagram I found BRCAStrong. BRCAStrong has made me realize I am not alone, guided me through each step in my journey and most important has helped me through this transformation. I have done transformational photo shoots and fashion shows. My passion is to help other women through this process and eliminate the feeling of isolation.
