Hi, I’m Kathy Conway, an 11 year survivor. Because of my dense breast tissue, once my mammogram caught tiny calcifications in my right breast, the follow-up ultrasound showed 3 large tumors. The right breast had to go, so I asked my surgeon to take the left one also, and to give me flat closure. I had no desire for reconstruction. I wanted to be one-and-done, go on with my life, no further surgeries.
I thought I’d wear prosthetics, but I quickly found out that option was not for me. Traditional mastectomy garments have an elastic bra band that lays across the mastectomy scars causing pain and irritation, and also restricting the chest while holding up heavy prosthetics — possibly heightening the risk of lymphedema for someone like me who had many lymph nodes removed during surgery. I searched for years for a mastectomy garment I could comfortably wear, and I heard the same complaints from other survivors. So I set out to find a solution.
After living flat for 8 years, I developed and patented an all-inclusive mastectomy top with integrated breast prosthesis that has eliminated the heavy elastic bra band, so nothing restrictive or irritating on the chest. Complete Shaping’s ultra-lightweight prosthetics are built in so you don’t have to purchase additional breast forms, and they don’t ride up and don’t weigh you down. This soft lightweight top also offers cost savings, as the cost of this all-inclusive top is usually less than the price of the prosthesis alone. Plus, the all-in-one prosthetic mastectomy camisoles are covered by most insurance plans and Medicare.
I am happy to now have the option to wear prosthetics when and if I want to. My mission is to help other breast cancer survivors who have had a mastectomy regain their pre-surgical shape in a comfortable and easy way, whether they choose to wear prosthesis daily or occasionally. It’s been a joy to put in time, energy and resources to hopefully better someone else’s life. I think we all feel a need to help those beside us, especially in this cancer world of uncertainty we live in.
