Dr. Dec is a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in breast reconstruction and microsurgery and treats many patients affected by a BRCA mutation at the New York BRCA Center. We met after a patient referred him to check out the resources available at BRCAstrong.org.
A unique aspect of Dr. Dec’s practice is scarless breast reconstruction. In this technique, the mastectomy and breast reconstruction are performed through an incision around the areola, and at the completion of the breast reconstruction, all scars are concealed with an areola tattoo. The final result leaves no visible scars on the reconstructed breast. The technique has been described by Dr. Dec in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open Journal. The full article that illustrates the concept with photographs can be found at this link.
By combining the aesthetic concepts used in cosmetic surgery with the most advanced reconstructive techniques available Dr. Dec is able to achieve truly stunning results. Patients affected by a BRCA mutation who wish to undergo risk reduction surgery are especially good candidates for reconstructive surgery with an aesthetic focus because they don’t typically require additional treatments such as radiation therapy which can impact the final result of a breast reconstruction.
